ANECDOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM FIVE DECADES IN
THE WOOL INDUSTRY
Roger Buchanan
Second edition
ISBN 978-0-473-22787-6
New Zealand’s wool industry has seen turbulent times over the
past 100 years and for many of those years Roger Buchanan was
intimately involved – growing up on the family farm near
Feilding, working for a wool merchant, studying then tutoring at
Massey College before setting out on a long career with various
statutory organisations including the Wool Commission, Wool
Marketing Corporation and Wool Board. He was the Board’s final
chief executive and oversaw a final wind-down process that
lasted until July 2012.
Last Shepherd is autobiography, industry history, analysis of
the industry and its politics and plenty of fascinating
anecdotes. For much of his career Roger Buchanan was involved in
overseas promotion and was one of New Zealand’s early ‘China
hands’. Wool was the stalking horse for our trade push into
China and Roger took a leading role in this, over more than 50
visits and many negotiations – starting from before China opened
up to the Western world. The book vividly describes highs, lows
and fascinating incidents from his experiences in China, along
with Japan, South Asia, Russia, UK, Europe, Iran and the Middle East.
